About the Event:

One of the most gifted harpsichordists of our time explores two centuries of music from Italy, France, Germany, and Bohemia in this preview of his Carnegie Hall debut. Frescobaldi’s wild flights of invention made him one of the most celebrated Italian composers of the 17th century and influenced composers across the continent. A century later, the refined beauty of Rameau’s keyboard music represented the pinnacle of the French tradition. Bach drew from all traditions—the Italian and French styles—to create the finest keyboard music of the Baroque.Mahan Esfahani, born in Tehran, studied musicology and history at Stanford University. He was a BBC New Generation Artist from 2008 to 2010, a Borletti-Buitoni Trust prizewinner, and in 2014 was on the shortlist for the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist of the Year and Gramophone Artist of the Year—all firsts for the harpsichord. In 2015 he was honored with the BBC Music Magazine “Newcomer of the Year” award and was nominated in three categories for the Gramophone Awards—Best Baroque Instrumental, Best Instrumental, and again Artist of the Year. Since making his London debut in 2009 he has worked tirelessly to establish the harpsichord in the mainstream of concert instruments for classical and contemporary repertoire. “…sure-minded and vividly realized…a pleasure to hear.” ~ The Guardian
