About the Event:

Best known as a star jazz pianist and composer, Jason Moran is also a visual artist whose fascinating work explores the interplay between objects and sound, sculpture and stagecraft. This exhibition, the first to showcase his visual work in a museum context, presents Moran’s mixed-media installations based on such historically significant jazz venues as the Savoy and Slug’s Saloon alongside recent charcoal drawings and time-based media works. Moran has delivered amazing performances at the Wex (with his trio Bandwagon in 2003 and Don Byron in 2006), and we’re thrilled to present this exhibition as well as The Last Jazz Fest, his interdisciplinary performance with Bandwagon and visual artists Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin, on July 20, 2019. Jason Moran is organized by the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and is made possible with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the William and Nadine McGuire Commissioning Fund. Additional support provided by Mike and Elizabeth Sweeney. Piano by Steinway & Sons. The exhibition was curated by the Walker Art Center’s Adrienne Edwards, Curator at Large, Visual Arts, with Danielle Jackson, Mellon Interdisciplinary Fellow, Visual Arts.
