Event
Ben Shahn: Then and Now
Tuesday, August 24, 2010 - Friday, September 17, 2010
August 24-September 17
Reception: Monday August 30, 5-7p.m.
From 1933 to 1938, Ben Shahn worked as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), traveling and documenting American living and working conditions. This exhibit, featuring Shahn's photographs of Ohio during the Great Depression, illustrates his substantial contribution to the emerging field of social documentary photography and shows how the medium became essential to both his political activism and his artistic practice. This exhibit is from the Cultural Arts Division's Permanent Collection.
Reshot images from today of those same spaces Shahn featured in 1938 will also be on display, courtesy of The Ohio Humanities Council. Images of Upper Arlington from the UA Community Photography Project and Cultural Arts Commissioners will also be exhibited alongside an accompanying exhibit, Portrait of American Town, a collection of historical UA photographs.

Some of these community photographed works will be exhibited alongside an accompanying exhibit, Portrait of American Town, a collection of historical photographs that document the events and everyday details that have created Upper Arlington's unique history and produced joy for countless families in our Arlington Hall Gallery simultaneously. Reshot images from today of those same spaces Shahn featured in 1938 will also be on display during this exhibit, courtesy of The Ohio Humanities Council.
