Description:

Midwestern residents are accustomed to natural disasters: rivers flood, tornadoes touch down, and severe winter weather strikes. But, what about earthquakes? From December of 1811 through April of 1812, the greatest series of earthquakes in United States history took place in the New Madrid Seismic Zone centered in Missouri. Although the earthquakes impacted much of the Midwest, most people today have no knowledge of this event.

As the 200th anniversary of the New Madrid earthquakes approaches, the Betts House will offer visitors an unique opportunity to learn about the geological forces behind earthquakes, discover the seismic history of our region, and explore the ways earthquakes affect buildings. Visitors will also leave with a better sense of the potential risk for seismic activity in our region.

Accompanying this major exhibit are first-hand accounts of the New Madrid earthquakes, a "shake table" that simulates seismic activity, a model seismograph, and 3D models of the fault lines that cause earthquakes.

The exhibit is supported, in part, by grants from The John A. Schroth Family Charitable Trust at PNC Bank, the Ohio Humanities Council, the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati, and the American Association for State and Local History. Sponsorship support has been received from The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Ohio, Bahl & Gaynor, GOP Limited Structural Engineers, THP Limited, The Wyant Family Foundation and individual donors.
