Renowned Art Troupe from China Booked for CSU Confucius Institute's Chinese New Year Gala
Ring In "The Year of the Horse" on Saturday, February 8, at the Cleveland Masonic and Performance Arts Center
To usher in "The Year of the Horse" (according to the Chinese zodiac), the Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University will present a Chinese New Year Gala at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 8, at the Cleveland Masonic and Performance Arts Center, 3615 Euclid Avenue.
Entertainment will be provided by performers direct from China - a renowned art troupe from Northeast Normal University in Changchun, the capital of Jilin province. The troupe has traveled internationally performing in many countries and have been well received by the audiences.
The program, titled "China Welcomes Spring," promises to deliver an unforgettable evening of rich Chinese culture, complete with modern and traditional dances, art, music, martial arts, calligraphy and painting.
"Short of actually traveling to China, you won't find a better way of celebrating Chinese New Year," said Dr. Haigang Zhou, director of the Confucius Institute and associate professor of finance at CSU.
"These talented young performers are among the finest in China," Dr. Zhou said. "Their multidimensional production highlights the diversity of Chinese culture, with many of China's different ethnic groups represented. It's a full menu of authentic Chinese entertainment."
Chinese New Year actually falls on January 31, but the occasion isn't a one-and-done event. Spring Festival (as the holiday is known in China) traditionally stretches over two weeks.
The Confucius Institute at CSU - one of only four such centers in Ohio and approximately 100 across the United States -is dedicated to sharing Chinese language and culture with Northeast Ohio, especially students at CSU and in local schools.
Tickets for the Chinese New Year Gala are $20. To purchase tickets, please visit www.csuohio.edu/offices/advancement/confuciusinstitute_gala2014.html.
