Designed by noted Columbus architect Frank Packard and built in 1906, this building was rehabilitated and converted into residential condominiums and office spaces in 2008. It was renamed 8 on the Square. A condo at the top occupies two floors.
The building immediately to the east at 16 East Broad Street was also designed by Packard. It was the original home of the American Professional Football Association which later became the NFL. Founded in 1901, The Columbus Panhandles – a football team whose members were mostly German immigrant railroad workers – was a charter member of the league. The team was named after the Pennsylvania Railroad route the “Panhandle Division” which went from Pittsburgh to Columbus, but later became the Columbus Tigers until it disbanded in 1926.
Columbus Panhandles’ coach Joe Carr went on to become president of the APFA and changed its name to the NFL. Under his leadership, the NFL became the dominant professional football organization that prohibited college players on professional teams. Carr was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
Both early Columbus skyscrapers are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
