Completed in 1989, the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts is unusual because it houses state offices, a public art gallery managed by the Ohio Arts Council and two performing arts theaters managed by CAPA. It was named for Vernal G. Riffe Jr., a former Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives and a prominent member of the state legislature for four decades. Riffe was an outspoken advocate for Appalachian Ohio and spent his career working to improve the lives of the people who lived there.
