On the northeast corner of Washington and East Broad is State Auto Insurance Company, which has showcased elaborate and unusual Christmas displays since 1934. Known today for its life-sized Nativity scenes, eight decades ago, State Auto created The Little Church in the Air, with over 800 electric lights on 18 different circuits, and a church atop the building that was more than 16 feet tall. Additionally, there were high-wheel bicycles and stagecoaches that moved, and 37 windows with real pine roping and flashing stars. A quartet also appeared at intervals to sing carols, accompanied by an organ. Created by the J.W. Johnson Company, it was said to be the most elaborate in the United States at the time.
The parking lot across the street on the southeast corner was once the site of a former mansion belonging to a descendent of the famous Neil family.
