In 1872, a small group of men gathered to discuss building a new German Evangelical Protestant Church. Though the structure would not be built until 1873, church services began in 1872 with Reverend Purpus as the first pastor. St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church, which was built to seat 800 people, was dedicated in 1874.
In 1924, the lot adjacent to the church was purchased and the architectural firm Miller and Reeves created plans for a larger, more accommodating space. The St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church building that stands today was built in 1925 in the European Romanesque revival style. It features 42 stained glass windows illustrating biblical stories from the Old and New Testaments that highlight simple objects and their divine nature.
