Columbus Fire Station Number Two is the busiest one in Columbus … and in 2001, it also was voted the busiest in the nation. The original station, located at the intersection of E Fulton and S High streets, was built in 1859 and has undergone many changes since that time.
Columbus Fire Station Number Two was volunteer-operated until 1863, when volunteers became paid staff. In 1875, the station fell into unsafe conditions, forcing it to find a way to rebuild. With a committed staff, station members rebuilt the station in only 97 days. The station was rebuilt again in 1892 into a two story, three bay station in order to safely house its new steamer fire engine. Station Number 2 ran until 1962 when it was torn down to make way for the interstate freeway system. As a result, it combined with Station 3 and in 2016 a new station was built. The exterior has a brick base and metal panel wall system, featuring off-white walls with red accents and a larger tower to increase visibility from the highway. The station’s number on the tower pays homage to the original station by using the same font as the original corner stone.
