For "The Pollinators" Holly Romano worked with lumen prints — a cameraless photography process that uses traditional darkroom black and white photo paper and exposes it to the sun with botanical materials placed on top. For this installation she chose Ohio native plants and ones known to attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to emphasize the importance of supporting this essential part of our ecosystem. In doing this, the sun’s UV rays manipulate the silver within the paper to create a colorful image of the plant materials. This process is Romano’s tribute and collaboration with nature to express the energy, spirit and deep connection we have with it. This method connects the artist directly to the environment by using foraged plants, the sun, and natural resources like rainwater and snow to create colorful, mystical images that speak to the energy of our ecosystem.

"The Pollinators" is part of Art Spot, a series of 13 temporary public art installations that explore themes around climate change and conservation. Featuring 14 artists and nine locations in and around downtown Columbus, Art Spot installations are in the windows of partner businesses and nonprofits through the first half of 2023. Art Spot was co-directed by Amy Leibrand and Stephanie Rond.
