Johnson began drawing and modeling figures as a child and was sent to the Columbus Art School to foster her talent. Later she moved to New York City to continue her studies where she studied under Augustus Saint-Gaudens, for whom she eventually worked as an assistant. Later, Annetta married his brother Louis Saint-Gaudens. She is best known for sculptures of children and animals, and she also did the finishing carving on a the allegorical marble sculpture “Painting” in front of the St. Louis Art Museum. Annetta Saint-Gaudens made this hand thrown earthenware pitcher in 1904, modeling the handle in the figure of her four year old son.
