Rereleased in conjunction with the James Baldwin centennial, Dick Fontaine and Pat Hartley's I Heard it Through the Grapevine follows Baldwin’s return to the South, where he visits important sites of the Civil Rights Movement and meets with key figures. As he travels from Selma to Atlanta to Birmingham (and to Newark to meet with writer and activist Amiri Baraka) he considers the promises of the movement and the fallacy of progress in its wake.
