Home to the Chemistry and Astronomy departments, Evans Laboratory sits on one of the busiest campus streets, but the new structure – which abuts an existing blank façade – provides a small and unusual gathering place for students. Inside the shallow structure made of butting aluminum channels, are three sets of sliding panel walls with mirrored surfaces on the reverse sides. The first layer allows the whole structure to be closed, providing only a glimpse of the interior. The next walls are blackboards with two movable ladders in front, making it possible to use the surfaces, and back sides of red. The last set of moveable panels is mirrored, and the back walls are also made of red enameled panels. Looking into this structure, it is not clear where the boundaries are because colors and patterns bounce back and forth. With constant change, it is a place that can be interactive, used as a backdrop, or observed from a distance. Always in motion, it appears larger, then smaller, and doorways appear but cannot be entered.
