Few passing by the stately old house with the mansard roof on Main Street, sheltered by ancient oaks and flanked by a highway, even notice it, let alone realize its impressive history. For most of its more than 130-year history, the house served as the Hannah Neil Mission and Home for the Friendless, one of the first charitable organizations in Columbus.
The Columbus Female Benevolent Society was founded in 1835. Hannah Neil, the wife of the wealthy owner of the Neil House and a co-founder of the Society, visited the poor and gave away food, clothing, and even her feather bed. However, Neil and the women soon realized that many of the poor were homeless women and children. So together, they raised $12,000 to buy this house, then the Nevell mansion. After renovations in April 1868, it opened its doors as a residential charity. Hannah Neil died that year and the name of the Society was changed to honor her. The mission served countless people in this house over the years, and in 1977, the agency -- now called Hannah Neil Center for Children -- moved to a new facility on Obetz Road.
