"Verse," a 5,850 square foot cork floor in the West Reading Room of Thompson Library is constituted of a field of words whose graphic organization follows the structure of a concordance or keyword subject search. A concordance is an alphabetical list of the principal words used in a book or body of work, with their immediate contexts. Although it is not a new system of organization - the first concordance of the Bible was constructed centuries ago - as a keyword system it is emblematic of how changes in both analog and digital search methods have given us the ability to index, cross reference and organize large quantities of information with an agility and speed which has changed the way we use libraries and connect information. Produced at the scale of an architectural field, the oceanic surround of the text demonstrates one order and access to the universally immersive experience of reading which remains constant across generations of technological change.
