Madalena Abakanowicz created Two Wings Flyer which sits in front of Jennings Hall in 2007. The stainless steel public work resembles a jet-powered metallic hawk -- both graceful glider and fearsome predator – to symbolize freedom and ominous danger.
While born to an aristocratic Polish-Russian family, Abakanowicz’s life was dominated by the events of war-torn, Soviet-occupied Poland. As a result of her childhood, her art celebrates dignity and courage; and, this dignity, resistance, and will of survival are part of her personal affinity to the culture of Poland and its political situation, and to the realities of her existence as an artist and intellectual.
