Ohio State’s Recreation and Physical Activity Center, known as RPAC, is a remarkable contemporary work of art. The five-level recreation and wellness complex was designed by Columbus firm, Moody Nolan. Completed in 2006, the building is covered in scarlet and gray glass windows and has a suspended running track. Several public works by husband and wife artists and musicians Bill and Mary Buchen surround the RPAC. Fascinated with how wind works with environmental art, the Buchens call their works sonic architecture.
Their piece Spherical Trajectory, made of stainless steel and acrylic, is a series of five poles with red spheres that react to the wind and dance with the activity of the ball field. (M) Body, located near 17th and Neil avenues, consists of six concrete, egg-shaped benches with images life-cast into them. And Percussion Celebration near the intersection of 17th Ave. and Tuttle Park, features a variety of instruments, including talking drums, sun gongs, a parabolic dish and an earth drum which is played by feet to provide a different kind of energy release from physical activity.
