The Schlee Malt House is architecturally distinct from its neighbors with dark gray painted brick and ornamentation, featuring green and gold trim, restored in the 1980’s. The building was erected between the 1870’s and 90’s. Although the sign on the building reads E.C. Buchsieb Block for a later owner, a decorative cameo image of Nicholas Schlee remains at the south end of the building’s Front Street façade.
It was the first brewery to install modern cold air and ice machinery, which were added in 1891 along with the stable on Hoster Street. With the exception of two garage door openings and the gray asphaltic finish on the brick, the stable closely resembles its original appearance. The roof features a central cupola flanked by two smaller ones, which you can make out if you view the building from the corner of Hoster and Front.
The final building at the Schlee Brewery is the bottling plant, just behind the stable at Hoster and Wall Streets. Erected in 1896, it is one of the best restored Italianate style buildings in the district. Note the arched windows, raised brick hood molds, and corbelled brickwork along the cornice.
