Next to the Borden Building is St. Joseph Cathedral. Construction began on the cathedral in 1868 and the Gothic beauty boasts many architectural details, including exterior walls of stone from surrounding quarries and stained glass windows with religious symbols. The clearstory walls are supported by arches and rest on clusters of Gothic columns on limestone pedestals. Stone crosses also are mounted on the outside walls to give relief to the structure, and the windows are cased in freestone from Pickaway County. Built next to the former Deshler mansion, the cathedral was located at a prestigious Broad Street address at a time when Catholics were often the subject of suspicion and mistrust. The site reflected respect, enhanced greatly by the friendship of Deshler. The cathedral is also almost equidistant between two parish churches, St. Mary’s to the south and St. Patrick’s to the north. One German and the other Irish; two communities who were often rivals, St. Joseph’s was positioned to remind all to keep peace with each other
