The Garden of Constants at Dreese Laboratory, also referred to as the number’s garden, is a bold, colorful, and popular installation by sculptor Barbara Grygutis. The installation consists of 2 major components, including 10 large number sculptures ranging up to 16 feet tall … scattered throughout the site. The numbers, 0 to 9, are the basic integers that comprise the elements of the worldwide counting system. Numbers 4, 8, and 9 are lying on the ground, designed with “holes” in them for people to sit and gather. The project was funded through the Ohio Percent for Arts Program which requires 1% of capital project budgets more than $4 million to be set aside to commission artwork for the site. Best known for her large-scale and colorful tile sculptures, Grygutis has completed more than 25 major public arts projects around the country. One of her most acclaimed pieces of work is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Columbia, Missouri.
Dreese Laboratory is also the site of Computer Research and Engineering, and is no stranger to blending the arts and sciences, especially in programs relating to geometric model making and animated research for facial reconstructions.
