Acknowledging the critical role trees play in our life (they put out the oxygen that we breath) and the impact of deforestation, “Mother Breath” presents a Tree of Life goddess with beautiful shining lungs. She fends off the shadows and tools of deforestation; signaling them to stop. She, as a benevolent gardener, also offers us hope in the form of a new sprout (her child) in the palm of her hand. The blank canvas/white trees behind her can be viewed without hope as the nothingness and shadows of the past that will be left behind if nothing is done; or with hope, as a clean slate and outline to be filled in like a coloring page with color and the beauty of life. How do you see it?

“Mother Breath” is part of Art Spot, a series of 13 temporary public art installations that explore themes around climate change and conservation. Featuring 14 artists and nine locations in and around downtown Columbus, Art Spot installations are in the windows of partner businesses and nonprofits through the first half of 2023. Art Spot was co-directed by Amy Leibrand and Stephanie Rond.
