Inspired by scientific reports documenting human impacts on nature, the installation Into the Uncanny Abyss, as a vision of the ocean impacted by acidification and pollution in the Anthropocene age. The installation is composed of elements that are created from of reclaimed materials—suggesting different types of mutant ocean creatures and their movements through space. The glow-in-the-dark elements reference new discoveries in how various creatures use bioluminescence.

“Into the Uncanny Abyss” is part of Art Spot, a series of 13 temporary public art installations that explore themes around climate change and conservation. Featuring 14 artists and nine locations in and around downtown Columbus, Art Spot installations are in the windows of partner businesses and nonprofits through the first half of 2023. Art Spot was co-directed by Amy Leibrand and Stephanie Rond.
