“The Brothers’ House” at 316–318 East Beck Street was purchased by brothers Andrew and Hartman Debus who planned to build a home in which to raise their families, side-by-side. However, during construction, the brothers had a serious dispute and both men refused to collaborate further on the design of their home. The end result of this squabble was a double with entirely different rooflines, lintels, and even brick types.
When the brothers left Columbus to fight in the Civil War, local legend has it that their wives were lonely and “declared enough was enough,” so they knocked a hole through the masonry wall separating the homes. This hole, however, was later filled in when the brothers returned from war still enemies.
To this day, no one knows why Andrew and Hartman fought so bitterly, but many have speculated that the source of their fight could have been a woman. When Hartman died in 1905, his widow was named Elizabeth. And, 15 years later in 1920, Elizabeth was also listed as the widow of Andrew when he died. Two different Elizabeth’s? Maybe, maybe not…
