The building at 784 Oak Street was originally the fire house for the first all black fire-fighting crew in Columbus. The tower on the West side of the building was used to hang the hoses, and when this process was initially used, the towers were at least three stories high. The building’s first renovation was in 1892 to accommodate Chemical House #1, which housed the equipment used to produce the carbon dioxide that provided the water pressure needed to put out a fire.
After reconstructing the building again in 1896, the fire house reopened in 1897 with an African-American Captain, Pleasant Higgenbotham, and it was called Engine House #12. The station was in service until 1947, but there was a fire squad, similar to current day EMS services, stationed there until 1952.
The building then housed the Columbus Cultural Art Center until the mid 1970’s. After the art center moved, it became the site of the Columbus Music Hall from 1988 to 2008. The building was rehabilitated in 2019 for the Gemut Biergarten.
