The Mural on the fence just south of Chop Chop gallery is part of a series initiated by local artists Jon Stommel and John Malta of the Black Sail Collective. Stommel’s process involved finding blank “canvases” across Columbus, getting permission from property owners to create a mural, and then inviting friends and artists to come “draw jam” … a process where artists virtually camp out, spending hours, days, or weeks creating free-flow imagery.
This mural featured more than two artists with diverse backgrounds, including illustrators who work from a library of personal symbols and characters, graffiti writers, designers, and abstract painters. This open collage mural allowed all them to have creative liberty with each other’s work, and if one artist felt something could have looked better, he or she painted it in, regarding nothing as precious.
The same strip of buildings also features several quirky advertisement murals painted by Chop Chop owners, as well as a two-headed house, which has become a gateway of sorts for the Olde Towne East business district.
