Columbus’ role as a cultural crossroads is evident in Green Lawn Cemetery. Franklin County was surveyed and settled by Virginia and Kentucky residents. Migrations and immigration from the 1840s through post-World War II transformed Green Lawn from a final resting place for prominent citizens into a public cemetery. Cultures of New England, Pennsylvania, and the Deep South were brought here by the arrival of Huguenots, Nova Scotians, fugitives and free African Americans, and refugees from Europe.
