"Unnatural Order" is an installation constructed with collected pods and leaves, crystal beads, sand and woven reclaimed plastic bags. The layering of these materials is inspired by the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, from Exosphere (190,000km above sea level) to Troposphere, a mere 10 kilometers deep, where we produce the agents of waste and destruction. It is the intention of Catherine Bell Smith to illustrate the beauty and order of the natural world and draw attention to the over-use of plastics in our daily lives.

“Unnatural Order” is part of Art Spot, a series of 13 temporary public art installations that explore themes around climate change and conservation. Featuring 14 artists and nine locations in and around downtown Columbus, Art Spot installations are in the windows of partner businesses and nonprofits through the first half of 2023. Art Spot was co-directed by Amy Leibrand and Stephanie Rond.
