Shortly after the American Civil War, a public meeting was held in Columbus to plan a suitable memorial to the martyred president: Abraham Lincoln. Attendees of the meeting were also proud of Ohio’s contribution to the war effort, especially the prominent role of General Grant and General Sherman in the successful outcome. This monument by Thomas D. Jones is three pieces. At the top is a marble bust of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. The center section frieze features a sculpted panel cut from Italian marble in high relief. It depicts the Confederate surrender at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, to General Grant, as well as General McPherson and General William T. Sherman under a large oak tree. And finally, the base of the monument was fashioned out of Quincy granite.
