This 9 foot tall, 150 pound statue is a rendering of the sea-fairing explorer who is the namesake of our city. This is the first statue of the famed explorer to be placed in Columbus, and was originally housed at the Pontifical College Josephinum on the eastside. The base upon which the statue is mounted was created in 1992 in recognition of the five hundredth anniversary of Columbus's voyage. Rededicated on Columbus Day of that year, the ceremonies were attended by the mayor of Columbus, governor of the state of Ohio, as well as the mayor and governor of Genoa, Liguria, the Italian city and region that Columbus is believed to be from. Genoa, Liguria is also the sister city of Columbus.
