Artist David Black created Breaker, now located near Arps Hall, in 1982. Inspired by boyhood memories of ocean waves on the Massachusetts coast, Black’s sculpture, like a breaking wave, moved across campus several times since its installation. Breaker was first installed along College Road to the side of the Wexner Center, facing the Oval. Then, to facilitate construction, it was moved to the front of Page Hall. When Page Hall was renovated, it moved to its current home at Arps. While reminiscent of a wave, it has also been assumed by some to be a small plane crash because of its color and form (not to mention its many moves).
Internationally recognized for his monumental public sculptures and walk-under structures called proto architecture, Professor Black uses architectural elements such as pillars, arches and open canopies to engage their environments spatially, and culturally.
