Established in the 1920s, Larry’s Bar at 2040 North High Street recently ended its run as a unique gathering place where you could quench your thirst as well as your passion for prose. The recipient of humanities grants to hold readings and publish folios of poems – and the site of frequent poetry readings – the bar was delightfully dark and brooding with the most interesting and esoteric restroom graffiti. Larry’s was also the site of a 1967 protest lasting almost six hours and involving 75 picketers when owner Lawrence Paoletti posted a sign listing undesirables who were not allowed in the bar.
However, when Larry’s was too crowded or patrons felt a need to “upgrade of sorts,” a popular alternative was the Pavilion Restaurant and Bar next door at the Ohio Stater Inn, which was built by developer, University Theater builder and OSU enthusiast Leo Yassenoff. The outside of the Pavilion Restaurant was adorned with medallions representing many OSU colleges and departments. Much of the English Department called the Ohio Stater home and Coach Woody Hayes would sometimes visit the restaurant, quietly sitting alone and reading while he ate.
