The only non-university building on Ohio State property, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was designed by Columbus firm Brooks and Coddington and completed in 1953. It is an outstanding example of mid-century modern architecture, yet the courtyard space between the sanctuary and the community center is reminiscent of a medieval garden.
St. Stephen’s stands as a testament to the residential and commercial neighborhood that once stood on the west side of North High Street between West Woodruff and West Lane avenues. In the 1960s, large homes and well-kept yards were replaced by North Campus dormitories as the University grew and acquired the neighborhood. One large Victorian home near the church on High Street was also the original Library Bar.
