In 1879, George Washington Williams was the first African American elected into state government in Ohio. African-American sculptor, Ed Dwight, created the bronze bust of Ohio State Representative Williams in 2001. Dwight is an art instructor at the University of Denver and was America’s first African-American astronaut trainee.
