Mohawk Street is said to be named for the Mohawk Native American tribe. When the first wave of German immigrants traveled to the American colonies, a large segment settled in New York’s Mohawk Valley and enjoyed peaceful relations with the Native Americans already there. This relationship was so noteworthy that Germans remembered the Mohawks and, in Columbus, named a street for them. However, it is more likely that the street was so named because Germans had a fascination with American Indians (possibly because they too did not have a homeland of their own in the 19th century) and the most widely-translated book into German was James Fennimore Cooper’s Last of the Mohicans.
Mohawk Street once had rail lines that were removed during World War II to provide scrap metal for the war effort. Today, Mohawk Street is the only street in German Village (and perhaps Columbus) with yellow bricks that run down the centerline to delineate north- and southbound traffic.
“Follow the yellow brick road as you walk down the street” and observe the architectural differences among cottages you pass.
