St. Mary Magdalene Parish and School was established in 1927 and dedicated in 1929. Originally, they were both located in one building and staffed by the Franciscan order of Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary from Joliet, Illinois until 1974. Over the decades, the church and school continued to grow and constructed buildings to meet the needs of the growing population. For example, St. Raymond’s Hall was originally slated to be a recreation center and meeting hall, yet upon completion, was handed over to the school for its growing student body. The same rings true with the church. 875 families were registered with the parish, but by 1955, it was too small to accommodate them. Therefore in 1954, construction began on a new church which was dedicated on March 11th, 1956.
Note the 28 beautiful, stained glass windows in the altar tower, representing symbols of the beliefs and teachings of the church. Additional stained glass windows, along with mosaics, are also on the walls and above various statues in the church. In addition to its beautiful aesthetics, the church’s interior also delights congregation members with sound from its impressive Estey Electropneumatic organ, featuring more than 1,000 pipes.
Additionally, as you can see, there also is an active Garden Club that keeps the grounds and a prayer and meditation garden on the West lawn in pristine condition.

Taking images of public art works and sharing your experiences is one of the most fun reasons to engage with public art. As a community, we care deeply about the artists who have contributed the artworks we enjoy every day. Please be sure to credit artists when you share your photos. If you have an interest in using public artwork present in this database for commercial purposes, please contact Jami Goldstein at the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Taking your own images of public artwork does not release you from the responsibility of artist credit and/or compensation.
